## What kind of jobs are on Upwork?

Mostly design, marketing and development. Three categories make up two thirds of all new jobs: Design & Creative, Sales & Marketing, and Web, Mobile & Software Development. Everything else, from admin support to legal work, shares the remaining third.

| Upwork category | Share of new jobs |
| --- | --- |
| Design & Creative | 27.3% |
| Sales & Marketing | 22.7% |
| Web, Mobile & Software Dev | 17.9% |
| Admin Support | 8.7% |
| Engineering & Architecture | 5.0% |

| Data Science & Analytics | 2.6% |
| Customer Service | 2.2% |
| IT & Networking | 1.9% |
| Translation | 1.9% |
| Legal | 1.5% |

Categories are broad, though. A "Design & Creative" job can be a $15 logo or a $5,000 3D product animation. Skills tell you much more about what clients actually want, so the rest of this article works with skills.

One thing to keep in mind: a typical Upwork job is tagged with about five skills. A job that asks for "Graphic Design, Adobe Photoshop, Logo Design" counts once for each of them. That is why you should never add up the job counts of several skills: the sum would count the same jobs two or three times.

| Administrative Support | 118 | 3,537 | $10 |
| Social Media Management | 116 | 3,473 | $12 |

A few patterns stand out in the top 20:

- **Visual work dominates.** Graphic design, video editing, web design, Photoshop, Illustrator, video production, post-editing and Premiere Pro are all in the top 20. If you can make things look good, there is no shortage of jobs.
- **Marketing and sales are huge.** Social media marketing, lead generation, marketing strategy, sales, Facebook and social media management each bring 116–260 jobs a day.
- **Admin work is steady.** Data entry (171 a day) and administrative support (118) both make the top 20.
- **Code is further down by count.** Web development (170 a day) and WordPress (119) are the only development skills in the top 20. JavaScript is 23rd with 107 a day, Python 36th with 73.

In total, 25 skills get 100 or more new jobs a day. That is plenty of room for specialists: even the 20th skill on the list, social media management, gets about 116 new jobs every day.

## Which in-demand skills also pay well?

Design software and code. The busiest skills are not the best paid: graphic design pays a median $24 an hour and social media marketing $16, against a typical $18 across the 100 most common skills. But a group of skills has both volume and a strong rate. We looked for skills with at least 30 new jobs a day and a median posted rate of $25 an hour or more.

### Which Upwork skills are both busy and well paid?

Design tools and code lead on volume: Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator bring 172 and 153 jobs a day at $25/hr, Python 73 at $30/hr, Node.js 39 at $35/hr.

| JavaScript | 107 | $25 |
| Logo Design | 84 | $25 |
| Python | 73 | $30 |

| Figma | 34 | $25 |
| 3D Rendering | 34 | $25 |
| Architectural Design | 32 | $25 |
| AI Agent Development | 31 | $30 |

The list splits into two groups:

- **Design tools at $25.** Adobe Photoshop (172 jobs a day), Adobe Illustrator (153), logo design (84), 3D modeling (62) and Figma (34) all have a median of $25 an hour, a little above the $24 for graphic design in general.
- **Code and AI at $30–35.** Python (73 a day), API integration (56) and artificial intelligence (39) sit at $30, React (44) at $34 and Node.js (39) at $35. JavaScript is the busiest coding skill, with 107 jobs a day at $25.

At the other end are skills with lots of jobs and low rates. Lead generation brings 207 jobs a day at a median $12, data entry 171 at $10, and customer service and cold calling over 100 a day each at $8. These are good entry points, but hard to grow a rate in. If you are just starting out, see [Upwork jobs for beginners](https://flconsole.com/blog/upwork-jobs-for-beginners). AI on Upwork is really two markets:

- **Building AI.** AI agent development, AI app development, machine learning and AI development pay $30–34 an hour. Clients want agents, chatbots, integrations with model APIs and automations that do real work.
- **Using AI to make content.** AI-generated video (31 a day), AI video generation (25) and AI content creation (19) pay $16–20 an hour, closer to classic video editing.

Automation tools sit in between. Automation pays $26 an hour, Zapier $26 and n8n $25, and they often appear in the same jobs as AI agents.

The clients behind AI jobs are also among the most established on Upwork. Across the 100 most common skills, the typical client (among those who had spent anything on Upwork) had spent about $3,200 before posting. For AI work the figure is much higher:

A client who has spent $5,000 or more on Upwork knows how hiring works, pays for the work and often comes back. For an AI freelancer, that matters as much as the rate. If you already work with Claude, Codex or Cursor, your agent can watch these skills for you: here is [a daily Upwork job digest from your AI agent](https://flconsole.com/blog/upwork-job-digest-ai-agent).

## Which Upwork skills go together?

Skills come in clusters, and the cluster is often what the client is really hiring for. For each skill, these are the skills most often tagged on the same jobs:

### Which Upwork skills go together?

Each skill comes with a cluster: React jobs most often also ask for Node.js and JavaScript, AI agent development for Python and API integration.

| If you offer | Clients most often also ask for |
| --- | --- |
| Graphic Design | Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Logo Design, Web Design |
| Video Editing | Video Post-Editing, Adobe Premiere Pro, Video Production, Adobe After Effects |
| Lead Generation | Sales, Cold Calling, B2B Marketing, Social Media Marketing |

| React | Node.js, JavaScript, Next.js, TypeScript |
| AI Agent Development | Python, API Integration, Artificial Intelligence, n8n |
| Shopify | Shopify Templates, Web Design, Web Development, HTML |

This is useful in two ways. First, put the whole cluster on your profile, not just the headline skill, so clients searching for any part of it find you. Second, combinations pay: React jobs pay a median $34 an hour and Node.js $35, and React's most common partner skill is Node.js. A profile that covers both fits the better-paid jobs.

## Where do US clients hire the most?

In admin, support and back-office work. US clients post more than half of the jobs for several of these skills, while their share is lowest in development, translation and voice work. In a typical skill, a bit over 40% of jobs come from US clients.

### Where do US clients hire the most?

Admin and back-office work: US clients post 58% of scheduling jobs and 56% of bookkeeping jobs, against 43% in a typical skill. Their share is lowest in voice acting (18%).

Source: new Upwork jobs flconsole tracked in the 30 days to 15 October 2026. A job counts for every skill it is tagged with. Highest and lowest US share among the 100 most common skills; dashed line = median skill.

Data: Where do US clients hire the most?

| Skill | Share of jobs from US clients |
| --- | --- |
| Scheduling | 58% |

| Customer Service | 51% |
| Node.js | 34% |
| Mobile App Development | 32% |

If you work US hours or speak with a US accent, support, scheduling and bookkeeping jobs are where that counts most. Jobs from US clients also tend to land during US business hours; our [Upwork job statistics](https://flconsole.com/research/upwork-jobs-2026) show the busiest hour for new jobs is around 1 pm New York time.

## How do I pick an in-demand niche on Upwork?

Look at three numbers together, not one: jobs a day, the rate, and the clients. Here is a simple way to do it.

1. **Your skills**

two or three you can deliver today

2. **Jobs a day**

20+ means fitting jobs daily, 100+ means you can be picky

3. **Rate vs $18**

$25–35 with 30+ jobs a day is a strong niche

4. **The cluster**

add the skills clients tag together with yours

5. **The clients**

a long hiring history means they hire and pay

6. **Be early**

an early proposal has less competition

1. **List the skills you can deliver today.** Not the ones you plan to learn. Start with two or three.
2. **Check each one's jobs a day.** Use the [Upwork rates by skill](https://flconsole.com/tools/upwork-rates) tool. Around 20 or more new jobs a day means you will see several fitting jobs every day; 100 or more means you can be picky.
3. **Compare the rate with the $18 typical rate.** A skill at $25–35 with 30+ jobs a day, like Python, React, Figma or AI agent development, is a strong niche. A skill at $8–12 with lots of jobs is a fine start, but plan a next step.
4. **Add the cluster.** Find the skills that come with yours and add the ones you can honestly do. Design plus Photoshop and Illustrator, or Python plus API integration, opens more jobs at better rates.
5. **Check who is hiring.** In AI agent development and machine learning the typical client has spent about $5,500–8,000 on Upwork. Clients with a long history are more likely to hire and pay.
6. **Be early.** In a busy skill, new jobs collect proposals quickly, so an early proposal has less competition. Seeing new jobs within a minute of posting helps you get there first.
