AI jobs on Upwork in 2026: 2,545 AI automation jobs in a month, and what clients hire for

How many Upwork jobs are about AI?
About one in four new Upwork jobs mentions AI, and about one in 29 is AI work. Of 73,201 new jobs flconsole tracked in September 2026, 20,210 (27.6%) used words like AI, LLM, chatbot, agent, n8n or automation. After an AI model and a person checked them, 2,545 (3.5%) were AI automation jobs.

What does "AI" in an Upwork job actually mean?
Mostly AI work, but not always. In two thirds of the 2,545 AI automation jobs the main task is building something with AI. In a quarter (25%) the main task is ordinary work with AI on the side, most often software development without an AI core or CRM setup.

Which kinds of AI work do Upwork clients hire for?
Process automation and AI inside a product are the two big areas: each comes up in about 30% of AI jobs, roughly 780 jobs in September 2026. AI agents (17%) and conversational AI, meaning chatbots and voice agents (16%), come next. A job can belong to several areas, so the shares add up to more than 100%.

Read the job before you pitch AI. In a quarter of AI automation jobs the main task is development, CRM setup or marketing, with AI on the side.
The two big areas are process automation and AI in products. Each comes up in about 30% of AI jobs. Agents and conversational AI follow at 16–17%.

About this data
- Jobs are new Upwork job posts flconsole tracked from 31 August – 30 September 2026: 73,201 jobs in all categories.
- Step 1: jobs with words about AI or automation (30 words such as ai, llm, chatbot, agent, n8n, automation) — 20,210. A random sample of the rest was checked to make sure AI jobs were not lost.
- Steps 2–3: an AI model labelled each job, and a person checked samples against the job text. Jobs where AI is only a passing word, ordinary development and automation without AI were removed — 2,686 AI automation jobs remained. Reposts of the same job count once: 2,545.
- Areas: a job counts in every area where AI is one of its main tasks, so areas overlap and shares add up to more than 100%. Shares are of the 2,545 jobs.
- Collection grew during September, so job counts are a lower bound; read them as "about". Shares are rounded to the nearest whole percent or one decimal. Rates and budgets are not part of this data.
