When to apply on Upwork: the best time of day and day of week (2026 data)

Short answer: apply on weekdays between 10 am and 3 pm US Eastern Time, and above all on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the new Upwork jobs flconsole tracked from 13 September to 13 October 2026, 45% were posted between 9 am and 5 pm ET, the busiest hour of the day was 1 pm ET (17:00 UTC), and the single busiest hour of the week was Tuesday at 11 am ET, with about 246 new jobs. Weekends bring roughly 2,200 new jobs a day, against about 3,700 on weekdays.

If you only need the hours for your own skill, type it into the free best time to apply by skill tool. It shows when jobs for 537 skills are posted, hour by hour, in your time zone.

The clock is only half of the story, though. The rest of this article covers what the numbers mean in your time zone, when each big niche peaks, and why opening a job early and checking who posted it matter at least as much as the hour you pick.

All figures come from 96,028 new Upwork jobs flconsole tracked, 13 September – 13 October 2026. The full dataset, with every chart, is on the Upwork jobs in 2026 research page.

What time of day are most Upwork jobs posted?

Jobs follow the US working day. Posting climbs from early morning Eastern Time, stays high from 10 am to 4 pm, and peaks at 1 pm ET. In the 30 days we looked at, the 1 pm hour brought 5,772 new jobs, while 1 am, the quietest hour, brought 2,479. That makes the busiest hour 2.3 times busier than the quietest.

Every hour from 10 am to 4 pm ET brought more than 5,000 new jobs over the period. Overall, 45% of jobs were posted between 9 am and 5 pm Eastern.

This is not surprising: 42% of the jobs came from clients in the United States, and the UK, Canada and Australia add more. Most clients write job posts during their own working day, so the US afternoon is when the list of new jobs grows fastest.

Two details are worth noticing. Friday drops off earlier than the other weekdays: after 10 am (210 an hour) it never gets back to midweek levels. And Sunday has its own small afternoon peak, at 4 pm ET (152 an hour).

What does the peak window look like in my time zone?

The data uses US Eastern Time, which was on daylight saving time (UTC−4) for the whole period. Here is the 10 am – 3 pm ET window, plus the busiest hour of the week (Tuesday 11 am ET), in a few time zones where many freelancers work:

What does the peak window look like in my time zone?

London (BST)15:00 – 20:0016:00

Kyiv (EEST)17:00 – 22:0018:00
Karachi (PKT)19:00 – 00:0020:00
Delhi (IST)19:30 – 00:3020:30
Manila (PHT)22:00 – 03:0023:00

Clocks change soon: Europe moves to winter time on 25 October and the US on 1 November 2026. After both changes, London, Berlin and Kyiv keep the same local times as in the table. UTC, Karachi, Delhi and Manila move one hour later (for example, the window becomes 15:00 – 20:00 UTC and 20:00 – 01:00 in Karachi), assuming clients keep posting on US business hours.

If you are in Asia, the peak falls in your evening and night. That is the main reason it helps to get new jobs pushed to you instead of sitting at the search page at 1 am. Entry-level jobs come a little earlier, mostly between 6 am and 12 pm ET; see Upwork jobs for beginners.

Is it better to apply on weekends?

It depends on what you want. Weekends bring fewer new jobs: about 2,200 a day, compared with about 4,000 on Tuesday and Wednesday. So if you only have time on Saturday, you will simply see fewer jobs that fit you.

The upside is a reasonable guess, not something we measured: we do not have proposal counts, but fewer clients are posting on weekends, and many freelancers who work on a weekday rhythm are off too. A good job posted on a Saturday afternoon may therefore sit with fewer fresh proposals for longer than the same job posted on a Tuesday at 11 am. Weekends are quieter, not empty, and they can be a good time to apply carefully rather than quickly.

When do jobs in my niche peak?

The five biggest categories all peak in the middle of the week, between 11 am and 2 pm ET. Using the per-day average for each weekday and hour:

  • Design & Creative (27.3% of jobs): peak Wednesday, 1 pm ET
  • Sales & Marketing (22.7%): peak Tuesday, 11 am ET
  • Web, Mobile & Software Development (17.9%): peak Tuesday, 12 pm ET
  • Admin Support (8.7%): peak Thursday, 11 am ET
  • Engineering & Architecture (5.0%): peak Wednesday, 2 pm ET

In each category the hours around the peak are almost as busy as the peak itself, so read these as "late morning to early afternoon, midweek" rather than an exact appointment.

Does applying early matter more than the time of day?

Probably, yes. This is reasoning rather than a measured fact, because we did not count proposals per job. But it follows from how hiring usually goes: many clients start reviewing proposals as soon as they come in, message the first good candidates, and may have a shortlist before later proposals arrive. A proposal sent 10 minutes after a job goes live is read by a client who is still deciding. One sent the next day may land after the decision.

That changes how to use the charts above. The peak hours tell you when the most jobs appear, not when you personally should be online. A job posted at 3 am ET in your niche is just as good for you as one posted at 1 pm ET, and probably has fewer early proposals. What matters is how soon you see it.

  1. Early beats peak. A proposal sent minutes after a job goes live reaches a client who is still deciding.

  2. Peak hours show volume, not your schedule. They tell you when most jobs appear, not when you have to be online.

  3. Night jobs count too. A job in your niche posted at 3 am ET is as good as one posted at 1 pm ET, and probably has fewer early proposals.

  4. What matters is how soon you see it. An alert for your own search can watch the hours you are away.

Which clients are worth your Connects?

Speed helps only if the job is real. In the jobs flconsole tracked:

  • 58.9% came from clients with a verified payment method who had already hired and paid freelancers on Upwork.
  • 38.7% came from clients who had never hired anyone.
  • 23.0% came from clients without a verified payment method, and almost all of those (22.8% of all jobs) also had no hires.
  • 41% came from clients who had spent nothing yet, and 30.7% from accounts that joined in the last 30 days.
  • The median client hire rate was 34%.

New clients are not always a bad bet; everybody hires for the first time once. But a job from an account with no verified payment and no hires is a weaker use of Connects than one from a client with a payment method and a hiring history. Before you write a proposal, check four things on the job post: payment verified, number of hires, total spent, and hire rate. What each of them means, and how often clients fail it, is in Upwork client red flags.

Questions

Weekdays between 10 am and 3 pm US Eastern Time. In the new Upwork jobs flconsole tracked, 13 September – 13 October 2026, the busiest hour of the day was 1 pm ET (17:00 UTC) and the busiest hour of the week was Tuesday at 11 am ET.

Tuesday and Wednesday, with about 4,000 new jobs a day each on average. Monday and Thursday are close behind at about 3,700. Friday drops to about 3,100, and weekends to about 2,100–2,200.

Yes, if a job fits you. There are fewer new jobs on Saturday and Sunday, but they are still there, and fewer people are likely to be competing for each one in the first hours.

The busiest window, 10 am to 3 pm ET, is 19:30 to 00:30 in Delhi, 19:00 to 00:00 in Karachi and 22:00 to 03:00 in Manila while US daylight saving time is on (until 1 November 2026). After that, add one hour.

We did not measure proposal counts, so we cannot put a number on it. But many clients start reviewing and interviewing as soon as proposals come in, so a strong proposal sent within minutes of a job going live has a better chance of being read than the same proposal sent a day later.
