How many Upwork jobs are for beginners?
About 11%. When clients post a job, they pick an experience level: entry, intermediate or expert. In the 30 days to 15 October 2026, 10,427 of 98,699 new jobs asked for entry level. That works out to about 346 new entry-level jobs on an average day, from about 170 on the quietest day to over 450 on the busiest.
About one job in ten: 10,427 of 98,699 new jobs (10.6%) asked for entry-level experience, and most of them (58%) pay a fixed price.
Intermediate and expert jobs are the other way round: 62% and 61% of them pay by the hour.

| All new jobs by experience level: Entry level | 10.6% |
| Entry-level jobs by type of pay: Fixed price | 58.3% |
| Entry-level jobs by type of pay: Hourly | 41.7% |
So entry-level jobs are a small slice, but not a rare one. Even a narrow niche gets a few new ones every day. Two more things set them apart:
- They are mostly fixed price. 58% of entry-level jobs pay a fixed amount for a defined task, while intermediate and expert jobs are mostly hourly.
- They are short. 49% are expected to take less than a month, against 39% of intermediate and 24% of expert jobs. Short jobs end quickly, and every finished contract can bring a review.
The level is the client's own choice, not a rule. Start with entry-level jobs, but if an intermediate job fits your skills exactly, apply to it too.
Where are the entry-level jobs on Upwork?
In translation, admin support and customer service. In these categories 18–27% of new jobs ask for entry level, two to three times the average. By pure count, Design & Creative has the most: about 104 entry-level jobs a day, simply because it is the biggest category.
Translation (27%) and admin support (24%) are the most open to beginners, against 11% across all jobs. By count, Design & Creative has the most: about 104 a day.

Sales and marketing, development, accounting, engineering, legal and IT are the least open: only 4–7% of their jobs ask for entry level. In these fields a beginner competes for the same jobs as experienced freelancers, so a portfolio matters more.
Subcategories show where beginners are welcome most clearly. In performing arts, which includes voice-over and acting, almost half of the jobs are entry level. QA testing, market research and product reviews, and data entry and transcription come close behind.
In performing arts, 46% of jobs are entry level; in QA testing, market research and data entry it is about 40%, nearly four times the 11% average.

Which skills have the most entry-level jobs?
Data entry, by a clear margin. About 38 new entry-level data entry jobs appear every day, then English (28 a day) and video editing (24). A job counts for every skill it is tagged with, so these numbers overlap.

The list splits into two kinds of skills:
- Big skills with a small entry share. Video editing, graphic design and social media marketing have 20–24 entry-level jobs a day, but that is only 7–8% of their jobs. There is work for beginners, but you compete with a lot of experienced people for the rest.
- Smaller skills where most jobs are entry level. In voice acting 44% of jobs are entry level, in voice recording 82%. In data entry it is 22%, in virtual assistance 20%. These are the easiest skills to get a first contract in.
If you already know a language other than English, check it too. German, Japanese and Spanish each had more than 100 entry-level jobs in the period, and 34–45% of their jobs were entry level.

What should a beginner charge on Upwork?
Around $15 an hour is a fair start. That is the median rate clients post for entry-level hourly jobs, and the middle half of them offer $8.50 to $20. Intermediate jobs pay a median $17.50, so the step up from entry level is small. Expert jobs pay $28.50.
The median entry-level job offers $15 an hour, only $2.50 less than an intermediate one ($17.50). Expert jobs pay $28.50.

| Entry level | $8.50 | $15 | $20 |
| Intermediate | $10 | $17.50 | $25 |
| Expert | $15 | $28.50 | $40 |
The rate depends on the skill much more than on the level. In admin and support work, entry-level and other jobs pay about the same, around $8–10. In design, video and web work, entry-level jobs pay $3.50–7.50 less than the rest.
| Skill | Entry-level jobs a day | Entry-level median | Median for other levels |
|---|---|---|---|

Hourly rate = middle of the client's posted range. Skills with 100+ entry-level hourly jobs with a rate in the 30 days to 15 October 2026.
So a sensible starting rate is the entry-level median of your skill: about $15–18 for design, video and writing, $8–10 for admin and support. Going far below it rarely helps. 30% of entry-level hourly jobs offer under $10, but more than half offer $15 or more. For rates in 40 skills at every level, see Upwork hourly rates by skill.
How much do entry-level fixed-price jobs pay?
Usually little: the median budget is $40, and half of entry-level fixed-price jobs offer under $50. Intermediate jobs have a median budget of $100 and expert jobs $200.
Half of them (52%) have a budget under $50; the median is $40, against $100 for intermediate and $200 for expert jobs. About 8% offer $500 or more.

| $250–500 | 8% | 495 |
| $500–1,000 | 3% | 198 |
| $1,000+ | 5% | 311 |
That sounds low, and for one job it is. But a $40 task that takes two hours is a fair first contract, and it can bring a review that helps you win the next, bigger one. About 8% of entry-level fixed-price jobs offer $500 or more, so bigger budgets do come up. Read the scope before you apply: a small budget for a small, clear task is fine; a small budget for a large, vague one is not.
Are clients who post entry-level jobs legit?
Mostly, yes, and they are more established than the average client. 80% of entry-level jobs come from clients with verified payment, and 66% from clients who have hired on Upwork before. Among clients who had spent anything, the median had spent $8,208 before posting.
Mostly established clients: 80% have verified payment and 66% have hired before. Only 25% are in the US, against 44% for intermediate jobs.

The biggest difference is where clients are. Only a quarter of entry-level jobs come from the US, against 44% of intermediate jobs. Pakistan (9%), India (8%) and the United Kingdom (8%) follow.
Still, about a third of entry-level jobs come from clients with no hires yet. Many of them are honest first-time clients, but jobs that ask you to pay for anything, to do a large unpaid test or to move the chat off Upwork are the ones to skip. How do I get my first job on Upwork?
Pick a skill where beginners are welcome, apply only to clients who pay, and be early. Here is a step-by-step version based on the numbers above.
- One skill
where beginners are welcome: data entry, VA, support, translation, QA
- Profile and rate
two or three samples, rate at your skill’s entry-level median
- Apply early
to clients with verified payment who have hired before
- 3–5 reviews
then move up to intermediate jobs, about six times as many
- Pick one skill you can deliver today. Prefer skills with a high entry-level share or many entry-level jobs a day: data entry, virtual assistance, customer service, translation, QA testing, voice work, or design and video if you have a portfolio.
- Fill your profile for that skill. One clear headline, two or three samples, and the skills clients tag together with it. A finished sample matters more than a long bio.
- Set your rate at your skill's entry-level median. About $15–18 an hour for design, video and writing, $8–10 for admin and support. Check your skill in the Upwork rates by skill tool.
- Apply to clients with verified payment who have hired before. Two thirds of entry-level jobs meet both. Their median hire rate is 38%: these clients actually hire.
- Take small fixed-price jobs for reviews. Half of entry-level fixed-price jobs pay under $50. A few of them, done well and fast, give you the reviews you need for bigger contracts.
- Apply early. Most entry-level jobs are posted between 6 am and 12 pm ET, Tuesday to Thursday. A proposal sent in the first minutes faces less competition.
- Move up once you have 3–5 reviews. Intermediate jobs pay only a little more per hour, but there are about six times as many of them.
