What is the average hourly rate on Upwork?
There is no single number, because the spread between skills is wide. Two figures are useful:
- About $18 an hour is the median of the posted rates across the 100 most common skills. We take the middle of the range each client sets (for "$15–25", that is $20) and find the median for each skill.
- $10–25 an hour is the range the median hourly job asks for across all jobs, according to our Upwork job statistics. One job in ten goes up to $60 or more at the top of its range.
The median hides most of what matters. A Node.js job and a cold-calling job are both "Upwork jobs", but the first offers about four times as much per hour.
AI and automation pays the most, about $28 an hour; development and design follow at about $25. Admin and support work sits at about $9.

The spread inside one skill is wide: the middle half of Node.js jobs offers $22–50 an hour, of virtual assistant jobs $6–12.

Which Upwork skills pay the most per hour?
Among common skills, the top of the table is all code: Node.js ($35), React ($34), and then Python, AI agent development and machine learning at $30. AI work is not just well paid, it is also backed by clients who spend: the median client posting an AI agent development job had spent about $5,500 on Upwork before, against about $2,200–3,400 for web development, WordPress and JavaScript jobs.
Design holds up better than many people expect. Logo design, Figma and 3D modeling all sit at $25, close to JavaScript, and graphic design is the single busiest skill on Upwork with 323 new jobs a day.
Which Upwork skills pay the least?
Virtual assistance, customer service, cold calling and appointment setting all have a median of $8 an hour, and data entry and admin support $10. These jobs are also among the most plentiful: lead generation alone brings about 207 new jobs a day. Data entry is also the skill with the most entry-level jobs, about 38 a day: see where beginners find work on Upwork.
Two things soften the picture. First, these clients are among the most reliable: 80–83% of data entry, admin, VA and customer service jobs come from clients with a verified payment method, more than the 69–71% for web development. Second, the middle half for most of these skills tops out at $12–22, so the better-paid quarter of jobs pays noticeably more than the median.
How much do fixed-price jobs on Upwork pay?
Most fixed-price jobs are small. For 24 of the 40 skills above, the median budget is $100 or less. The bigger budgets cluster in the same places as the higher hourly rates:
- $200 median: React, Node.js, Mobile App Development, Figma, Copywriting, Google Ads and Cold Calling.
- $250 median: Facebook Advertising, Sales, Appointment Setting and Project Management.
- $50–80 median: Data Entry, Microsoft Excel, Voice-Over and Video Editing.
Sales, Facebook ads, appointment setting and project management lead with a median budget of $250; React, Node.js, Figma and copywriting follow at $200. Data entry and Excel jobs have a median of $50.

A fixed budget on Upwork is often a placeholder rather than a final price, so treat it as a signal of scope, not a hard limit.
How should I set my hourly rate on Upwork?
Use the numbers above as a map, not as a price tag. A few practical rules follow from them:
New to Upwork, start near the 25th percentile of your skill, $20 an hour for Python; with reviews, the median ($30); as a proven niche expert, the 75th percentile ($40) or more.
- Left edge: new, no reviews · right edge: niche expert
- Median: with reviews

Show data
| Skill | New, no reviews (25th percentile) | With reviews (median) | Niche expert (75th percentile) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Python | $20 | $30 | $40 |
| Copywriting | $15 | $24 | $32 |
| Graphic Design | $16 | $24 | $30 |
- Find your skill's middle half and decide where you belong in it. New to Upwork, with no reviews yet? The lower half gets you interviews. With a portfolio and reviews in this exact niche, quote at or above the 75th percentile.
- Price the combination, not the single skill. Jobs that ask for React plus Node.js, or Python plus AI agent work, sit at the top of the table. If your profile covers both, your rate can too.
- Check the client before the rate. A $40 job from a client with no verified payment and no hires is a worse bet than a $25 job from a client who has spent thousands. Payment verified, hires and total spent are all on the job post.
- Don't race to the bottom on busy skills. In video editing and social media marketing there are 260–314 new jobs a day. Volume means you can be choosy; the jobs that fit you will keep coming.
